  Because without one, every assignment becomes an individual negotiation. A policy creates a clear framework: who is entitled to what, according to what logic, and in which country. This saves time, makes costs predictable — and, what is often underestimated, it takes the pressure off daily HR operations. You no longer have to justify every exception, but can refer to a rule that applies to everyone.
• What elements belong in a modern mobility policy?
  The building blocks are: assignment types, benefit structure, housing, allowances, tax and social security rules, family support, repatriation — and today, rules for remote work are essential. The part that is most often missing is the return. Many policies describe the outbound journey in detail but remain silent on what happens when the person comes back.
• How often should a policy be updated?
  Every one to two years — and whenever regulations change. An outdated policy is more dangerous than none at all: it creates a sense of security while the underlying foundations are no longer correct. That’s why I regularly review existing guidelines with a fresh eye, rather than writing them once and filing them away.
• How does a policy remain globally consistent yet locally applicable?
  Through a global framework with local addenda. The philosophy and logic of the benefits apply equally everywhere — what differs are the local conditions: tax law, housing costs, school systems. This includes compliance checks and clear escalation paths for those cases that still don’t fit the mold. Because those always exist.
• How do we introduce a new policy internally?
  Not via a mass email. A policy is applied when people understand it: training for HR, a concise guide for managers, FAQs for employees, and a point of contact for the questions that still arise. The most common reason a good policy fails is not its content — it’s that nobody knows about it.
